About The Artist

Donna Mendes is a contemporary fine artist whose work explores the quiet mystery and visual possibilities of everyday life. Inspired by both internal reflection and the external world, her paintings often focus on subtle layering, nuanced color relationships, and the expressive potential of a restrained palette.

Born in Glen Cove, New York, Mendes developed an early connection to art and the natural environments around her, particularly the coast. She earned her BA in Fine Art from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and has continued her studies across the United States and abroad. Now based in Berkeley, California, her work reflects the influence of both East and West Coast landscapes, as well as her extensive training in classical realism.

Color plays a central role in Mendes’ practice. Her deep study of light and observation—particularly through still life—has shaped her sensitivity to how color shifts under different conditions. Through subtle variations in tone and temperature, her work evokes mood, atmosphere, and a sense of place, inviting viewers into a contemplative visual experience.
